Promising Second SONA of President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III delivered his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the House of Representatives in a joint Senate and House session of Congress in Quezon City, last Monday.

In his 11-page transcript that I've read, President Aquino showcased many of his achievements for his first year in presidency and gave a glimpse about his upcoming plans for the country in front of thousands of attendees. Although Aquino's State of the Nation Address was focused primarily on his success for his first year in office and his future endeavors for the country, president Noynoy also shared his thoughts regarding the "wang-wang" (corrupt/corruption) from the past administration. The president revealed some of his exploits in eradicating corruption in the government which I'll talk about later. Meanwhile, I'll first let you know the country's conditions after president Aquino was in office since last June 2010, of course this is according to him.

First Year Achievements

According to him in his SONA, the Philippines' population rate in hunger has decreased from 20.5% just last March to 15.1% last June. The value of the decreased percentage equals to 1 million Filipino families who can now eat three meals in a day (which is the basic necessity of Juan Dela Cruz).

Two Non-Working Holidays at the End of August!

Last Saturday in a radio interview, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte announced to the public that August 29 and 30 (Monday and Tuesday) have been declared by Malacanang as non-working holidays.

These dates mark the country's National Heroes' Day (Aug. 29) and with respect for our Muslim brothers and sisters, the end of Ramadan (Aug. 30).

Be Careful of Counterfeit New Peso Bills!

Just recently on the news, authorities have found out that many counterfeit versions of the Philippines' new peso bills are circulating together with the real ones. Although these bills are not yet fully circulated in the public, an average person, if not careful, might be a victim of such deception.

The authorities said that counterfeit versions of these bills includes P20, P50 and P100. They said that fake versions can easily be spotted because they looked like ordinary photocopies of the real bills.

The Central Bank of the Philippines however, strongly believes that the public can tell whether its real or not. The bank also added that genuine bills have various security features that is hard for a counterfeited bill to duplicate such as watermarks and security threads.

What is the Importance of Marriage?

While scanning for something interesting to write about, I stumbled in an intriguing news article in Yahoo Philippines regarding marriage. The article talks about marriage becoming of less value nowadays for Filipinos.

According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), more than 37% of the 1.78 million babies born in the country had unmarried mothers. This latest population census was 12.5% higher than the previous year, and compared with a 2% increase for all births in the country. According to one official who officiates the licenses of weddings in NSO, that an increasing number of Filipinos are now seeing marriage as an option, rather than a requirement when starting a family.

In statistics, it was found that eight out of 10 Filipinos are Catholic. The Philippines is one of the only three places in the world today that is against divorce, together with Malta and Vatican. Though most people living in the country are Catholic, numbers show that most Filipinos are no longer considering the importance of marriage, which is contrary to the church's teachings.

Most Filipino couples nowadays looked at marriage as just another unnecessary expense they need to eliminate. One couple in Manila, who now has a three-year-old son, reasoned out that instead of spending the money for their wedding, they used it to buy their baby's milk and needs. Though the couple's thinking seemed reasonable for not engaging in marriage due to their financial difficulties, does this mean it's OKAY not to consider marriage anymore? Is it alright not to marry, considering that what's matter most is your love for one another?
