Remembering EDSA Revolution

Today, February 25, 2012, the Philippines is commemorating the historic EDSA Revolution for the 26th time. EDSA revolution has and always be remembered as one of the country's memorable event for the battle of freedom of many Filipinos against the Marcos administration. This revolution was led by thousands of Filipino people who came from different provinces of the country who are all willing to die just to have its freedom from the Marcos dictatorship. Former president Ferdinand Marcos has held the presidential seat for 20 years in the country from 1966 to 1986. In his first term as president, he has led the country to progress. But as his term as president was ending, Marcos made a tremendous decision to remain in power. Marcos declared Martial Law on September 22, 1972 but signed the Proclamation No. 1081, extending his position in the presidency on September 21, 1972.

During Martial Law, the people are no longer given the right to democracy. The people's right to vote or to choose their leader was now taken away. Marcos eliminated and put to prison his critics and the media was put to silent to air their opinion against the Marcoses' corruption and abuse of power. Thus, the freedom of the press was taken. The people all over the country are now blind to see and know what the Marcoses and other military officials are doing. Many people were salvaged and murdered, especially the people working in the media. And finally, after almost 14 years of dictatorship by the Marcoses, the Filipino people had enough. Thus, the People Power Revolution took place in EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos Avenue). The Filipino people have altogether united in one location, coming from different provinces of the country, and marched down together to Malacanang to thwart Marcos out of office. The people can no longer tolerate all the corruption and the abuse of presidential power by Marcos. And of course, since Marcos controls the country's defence (military), the military tried to stop the Filipino people from doing the revolution. But no matter what they do, the people are all ready to die. So the only way for them to stop the revolution is to slaughter all the people. It would have been a bloody mess if that happened! But praise be to God alone! The soldiers who were commanded never carried their commander's order! And so, Marcos was removed in the presidential seat on February 25, 1986!

Its good and essential to us Filipinos to remember and ponder this national event once a year. Knowing that many people have died to gain our freedom from the Marcos' dictatorship. And for our generation, let's be thankful we're not given a chance to experience what our grandfathers and fathers had by honoring and remembering this day. Lastly, let's give God the gratitude and praise for all he has done for us. To Him be the glory forever!
