No Fare Hikes this Year for Public Utility Vehicles

The Land Transportation, Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has declared to the public yesterday that there will be no increase in fares for jeepneys and other public utility vehicles until the end of the year. This was announced by LTFRB board member Manuel Iway. He said that as December, the month of Christmas holidays, is fast approaching, raising of fares would be a bad timing.

According to Iway, even if the board will hold a hearing on the December 8 issue for fare hikes, the board can only make it's deliberations by January 2012. Some jeepney groups, however, are appealing to the LTFRB for a P0.50 fare increase for the first four kilometers at least before the year ends. Iway added that the LTFRB can possibly deliberate on the provisional increase but gave no assurance whether it will push through.

In another story, the Department of Energy (DOE) is questioning about Shell and Total's oil increase of P0.20 per liter for its diesel oils while lowering down the prices for their other gas oils by P1.20 per liter. The DOE will also be investigating other oil companies for lowering their diesel oil prices by only P0.20 per liter while P0.50 per liter for other gas oils.

The Department of Energy has their own computation for canvasing an appropriate oil pricing that oil companies should impose. So far, these move by Shell and other oil firms is subjected for investigation. Energy Undersecretary Jay Layug said that the government may file a case if these oil firms cannot justify their actions.
