Scary New Species Discovered in Year 2011!

As Halloween starts tomorrow, I've found some interesting photos of 9 New Species Discovered This Year (2011) in National Geographic's website that may raise a few hairs in your skin. These new creatures are quite fascinating and I believe its great to be aware of such creatures to exist.

The following are the National Geographic's 9 Spooky New Species Found This Year:


1. "Demon" Bat

Also named as Beelzebub Bat, this specie got its name from its appearance. It has a black head, dark fur behind the back and has whitish fur in front of its abdomen. The newly discovered animal according to scientists are shy creatures and likely avoid human interactions. If captured, this little critters will try everything to escape from its captor's hands. If they can't escape any longer, their second line of defense would be to fight. These hellish creatures were found in the remote rain forest of Vietnam.


2. Cyclops Shark
From the name itself, we can perceive that this creature has only one eye. Truly a one of a kind discovery in Mexico. The cyclops shark was first to be thought as a myth only, but now, because of the encountered happen and with real pictures taken, it proves that such creatures definitely exists. According to scientists, documentation of these creatures were taken way back before. But these one-of-a-kind creatures had never been seen to survived the wild yet. The reason why these species exists according to them were because of the abnormality of the mother shark's embryo during impregnating the specie.

3. "Mind Control" Fungus
Such a spooky name isn't it? A fungus that can control an insects mind! Amazingly, this new fungus specie with a scientific name Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani was seen to grow in an ants head in the Brazilian rain forest. This fungus was first thought to be only one specie, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, but scientists later announced that they are four distinct species with each one being able to control an ant's mind. The fungus can infect its host's mind, manipulate and control it. Later, the specie will kill its host as it finds a place were it will no longer needs its service.


4. Devil Worm
This nematode specie with scientific name Halicephalobus mephisto was discovered beneath the earth miles away and is said to be the deepest-living creature ever found.

5. Vampire Flying Frog
A new specie of frog was discovered in the mountain jungles of Vietnam. It's a vampire-like frog that leaps high enough and glides from tree to tree by using its webbed fingers and toes. With a length of 2-inches (about five centimeters), this animal lives only in Southern Vietnamese cloud forest. It's scientific name is Rhacophorus vampyrus.


6. "Evil Spirit" Dinosaur
Paleontologists discoverered another specie of dinosaur that had a bizarre skull. Having a deep and short snout with monstrous front teeth, the dinosaur had earned its name as Daemonosaurus chauliodus which means "buck-toothed evil spirit" in Greek.

7. Tiny Pit Viper
This new snake specie was first discovered in the country of China as a group of Chinese surveyed a forest in Maolan National Nature Reserve in Guizhou. The snake is the smallest pit viper yet discovered in China for it only grows to a maximum length of about 2.6 feet.

8. Fanged Frog
Another frog specie was discovered last August in Sulawesi, Indonesia. These new species' fangs, according to a biologists, are not actually teeth but only protrusions of the animal's bones. Scientists gave a tentative scientific name for it, Limnonectes Species I.

9. Ruby-Eyed Pit Viper
Discovered in a forest near the city of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. This pit viper is not like any other pit vipers that scientists compared that came from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for it has ruby-like eyes. Scientific name is Cryptelytrops rubeus
