UAAP, which stands for University Athletic Association of the Philippines, is an organized body established since 1938 that promotes sport competitions between eight different universities in Manila. The eight participating universities are UP (University of the Philippines), NU (National University), UST (University of Santo Tomas), FEU (Far Eastern University), UE (University of the East), AdU (Adamson University), DLSU (De Lasalle State University), and Ateneo de Manila University, which is the host of the Season 74 kick off.
A total of 3,700 student-athletes in 15 different sport competitions were in attendance for the said event. Due to the heavy rain, all athletes were compelled to hold an umbrella. Each umbrella in different colors, signified the athletes' respected universities.
In an orderly manner, all athletes in each university marched their way around the oval for recognition. Former Ateneian and PBA superstar Olsen Racela did the honors of carrying the UAAP torch, that had traveled from one school to another, and lighted up the 20-foot cauldron on a conveyor. President of UAAP Season 74 president Ricky Palou declared the game's opening with the theme entitled: "All Out, All Heart".
