Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's Inappropriate Confrontation with a Sheriff During Demolition

Yesterday evening, while I was watching Bandila, ABS-CBN News' famous late night program in the television, I was actually shock to see and witness on how a "high positioned and honorable public servant" handle things when in a very tough situation.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte might probably face charges of disbarment of her license as a lawyer after punching a sheriff who enforced a demolition in Barangay Agdao yesterday morning. Duterte reasoned out to the media that she was just defending the people and wanted to prevent the riot from happening in the demolition. She was furious at the sheriff after knowing that he did not consider her favor of delaying the demolition for two hours. Duterte doesn't want the demolition from not happening, she simply wants it to run smoothly and peacefully. That's why she's asking only a 2-hour delay for her to be there as the demolition takes place. Duterte said that the people will only listen to her.

Though her intention was probably right in the eyes of some, her actions were still not appropriate. As the mayor, she should not only uphold the rights and welfare of her people in any means. She supposed to handle it according to the law of the land and in a diplomatic way.

Interviewed by the media, Duterte explained that she already sent an emissary to take Abe Andres, the sheriff who she punched and brutally attacked, in the hospital. She also said the she had instructed a doctor to admit Andres but the sheriff refused to be admitted. Asked whether she had apologized, Duterte simply reasoned out that her act of sending an emissary to Andres was an act of apology. But she never made any public apology to the sheriff. Duterte told the media that she is ready to face any charges that might be filed against her. Meanwhile, Abe Adres was interviewed by the media and he said that he is ready to forgive Ms. Duterte for her hostile actions.

Right now, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is investigating the situation.
