There was a study conducted by Dirk van Helden, together with his colleagues at the University of Newcastle at Callaghan, Australia that by applying an ointment containing nitric oxide in a snake bitten area would help prolong the life of the victim for almost one and half hour. Just a time needed by victims to seek immediate medical treatment.
Based on their findings, applying an ointment that contains nitric acid retards the intrinsic lymphatic pump, thus prolonging lymph transit time for rodents and humans. This results in increase of rats survival time after a venomous snake bite.
